Dhruvi Modi
It has been weeks since the first time Rahul Gandhi announced his intention to resign as the President of the Indian National Congress, and today, after several members of the party urged him not to do so, he finally announced his resignation from the post.
Taking responsibility for the loss in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi posted an open letter of resignation on Twitter in which he stated that it would be unjust to hold others accountable and ignore his responsibility as the President of the party. He also goes on to say that after his resignation, the Congress Working Committee must begin the search for a new President.
Calling himself a loyal soldier of the Congress and a devoted son of India, he claims that he has no hatred or anger towards the BJP; he just resists their idea of India, and that he will continue to serve and protect India till his last breath.
The Indian National Congress lost by a large margin in the Lok Sabha elections this year, with winning only 52 seats. However, Mr. Gandhi, in his letter stated, “We fought a strong and dignified election. Our campaign was one of brotherhood, tolerance, and respect for all of India’s people, religions, and communities.” While talking about fighting alone for India, and being extremely proud of it, he said, “I personally fought the Prime Minister, the RSS and the institutions they have captured with all my being.”
Subtly criticizing the electoral body and the procedure, the MP from Wayanad said that “an election cannot be fair without arbiters – a free press, an independent judiciary and a transparent election commission that is objective and neutral.” Stating that the Indian democracy has been fundamentally weakened, he goes on to say that “There is a real danger that from now on, elections will go from being a determinant of India’s future to a mere ritual”.
Lastly, Mr. Gandhi thanked the thousands of Indians who have extended their support to him, and gives an assurance that he will continue to fight for the ideals of the Congress Party and will always be available for any services, input, or advices the party may need from him. “I was born a Congressman, this party has always been with me and is my life’s blood and forever that way it shall remain”.
