“சாதிகள் இல்லையடி பாப்பா!-குலத்
தாழ்ச்சி உயர்ச்சி சொல்லல் பாவம்;
நீதி உயர்ந்த மதி,கல்வி-அன்பு
நிறை உடையவர்கள் மேலோர்.”

Bharathiyar’s poem on Caste system, which translates into :
There is no caste system.
It is a sin to divide people on caste basis.
The ones who are really of a superior class are the ones
excelling in being just, wise, educated and loving.

Just days after the world saw Tamil Nadu agitating against the imposition of Hindi language, the political parties as well as the linguaphiles in the state slammed the state government for portraying Subramanya Bharathi donning a Saffron coloured turban in Class 12th State Tamil textbook.

School Education Minister, KA Sengottaiyan released the textbook in the presence of Tamil Nadu Textbook and Educational Services Corporation Chairperson B. Valarmathi in Chennai.

The opposition took no time in slamming the authority with the DMK alleging the move is a deliberate attempt to saffronise education. According to Sources, former School Education Minister and DMK MLA Thangam Thennarasu said, “When has anyone seen Bharathiyar with a saffron Turban? This is an attempt to subconsciously give students a different image of Bharathiar.”

“We have heard of content being removed and altered in history textbooks but this is the first time that a Tamil textbook is mired in controversy, This is an attempt to get the message across that only Hinduism worked for Tamil.” A Tamil teacher argued.

B. Valarmathi clarified that politics or religion had no part to play in education and the issue would be clarified if it is a genuine mistake. However the artist said the depiction was of the Indian flag and there is no intention to change the colour of the poet’s turban.
