“Tamil Nadu will follow only two-language policy. Only Tamil and English will bravely march in Tamil Nadu.”
KA Sengottaiyan, AIADMK
The education system in India is set to undergo a massive overhaul as the drafting committee set up by Narendra Modi in 2017 submitted the draft of the National Education Policy 2019 to HRD minister Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal and Minister of State for HRD, Sanjay Shamrao Dhotre on May 31 in presence of other senior officials from the ministry.
While some of the mooted changes in the educational front have been appreciated by the citizens like the implementation of Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE), extension of Right To Education (RTE) to cover children in the age gap of 3 to 18, changes in Mid-day meal scheme etc, the “three language formula” has once again revived the displeasure of mandatorily learning Hindi forcefully in the Tamil speaking state as netizens went all out against the mandatory move with hashtags #StopHindiImpostion and #TNAgainstHindiImposition garnering over 1.5 lakh tweets as of 6:15 P.M and is trending worldwide.
The state of Tamil Nadu has always been known for its resistance against the imposition of Hindi language since pre-independence era when in 1937, C. Rajagopalachari of the Indian National Congress (INC) made it compulsory for the Madras Presidency to teach Hindi at schools resulted in a series of protests led by E.V.Ramasamy (Periyar) which saw conferences, marches , picketing being organised at a large scale. This was just the beginning of a revolution as Madurai witnessed an expulsion of sentiments for the language in 1965 when a full-fledged riot broke out in the city followed by burning of the constitution in 1986 against the introduction of the National Educational Policy by the late Rajiv Gandhi.

The move was shunned by the politicians as well in the state. According to Sources, KA Sengottaiyan , School Education Minister of Tamil Nadu, said, “ Tamil Nadu will follow only two-language policy. Only Tamil and English will bravely march in Tamil Nadu.”
Several other politicians like AMMK leader T.T.V Dhinakaran, Kanimozhi, Kamal Haasan also strongly opposed the move.
