The NHAI moved Supreme Court on Friday against Madras High Court’s verdict to halt proceedings on the ₹10,000 crore ambitious 8-way lane Salem highway project connecting the city with Chennai.

The Madras High Court had quashed the proceedings related to land acquisition on April 8 2019 following massive protests from activists, state opposition parties like the DMK and many landowners where Justices T.S.Sivagnanam and Bhavani Subbaroyan emphasised on the need for environmental clearance for such a big project as this.

The project was supported by the Centre, claiming the Expressway would help prevent release of excess amount of Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere and also submitted carbon dioxide reduction would be obtained through reduction in diesel consumption by 10 crore litres per annum.

Ironically, one of the leaders, PMK Founder Anbumani Ramadoss, who petitioned against the project last year is now aligned with the ruling party. Ramadoss was a favourite to win the Dharmapuri constituency in the Lok Sabha Elections but was given a shock by DMK’s Dr. Senthil Kumar, mostly owing to the discrepancies in the leader’s political stand.

The Chief Minister of the state has been requesting for support from local residents during the election campaigns, claiming that many people are giving lands on their own and more people should join in. Nitin Gadkari also supported the AIADMK government and had said that the expressway would be built in due time.
